| Description |
English: The Ocracoke Pony Pens on Ocracoke Island, operated by the National Park Service, and located within Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The ponies, called banker ponies, are likely the descendants of horses carried by ships sailing through the treacherous waters off the island which swam to shore after shipwrecks. They roamed free on Ocracoke Island until the paving of Highway 12 (NC-12) in 1957, when they were penned in for their safety. As of 2022, there are 13 horses in the herd. The Pony Pens are located on a deserted stretch of NC-12, 6.5 miles from the village of Ocracoke, midway between the village and the ferry terminal on the north end of the island. |
