| Description |
English: This is the remains of a lock along the old Ohio and Erie Canal, which was built along the Licking River at Black Hand Gorge in the late 1820s to early 1830s. At this site, the canal was a water-filled, dug-out trench that intersected the Licking River downstream from here. The river was dammed to make a higher level of calm water ("slackwater"). A towpath was used by horses or mules to pull canal boats. The building stone of the canal lock is blocks of Black Hand Sandstone (Lower Mississippian), which is the local bedrock unit.
