Summary[edit]

Description
English: One of the oldest graveyards in New England, Old Burial Hill, Marblehead, Massachusetts, was founded in 1638 on the site of Marblehead's first meeting house. Approximately 600 soldiers from the Revolutionary War are buried here, primarily in unmarked graves. Many of the beautifully eerie headstones are well-preserved and display seventeenth and eighteenth funerary motifs such as the winged death's dead, the skull and crossbones, and the urn and willow. Old Burial Hill was the inspiration for the graveyard in the fictional town of Kingsport featured in H.P. Lovecraft's "The Festival" (written in 1923). See the Old Burial Hill Official website.
