Summary

[edit]
Description This building, located along Whittier Depot Street at it’s intersection with Tarhelia Heights, is the former American Congregational Church and School, which used to serve the then-thriving town of Whittier, North Carolina. Located on the Swain County side of the Tuckaseigee River, the building anchors one end of the town’s original business district, which centered around a railroad depot on the Murphy Branch of the Western North Carolina Railroad, with its original steeple visible in the black and white photo at the end of this photo set. The building, constructed in the late 19th Century, originally had a steeple and was a vibrant center of activity, but, as the town waned in its fortunes, the congregation that called the building home dissolved, and the building became a private residence, with the steeple removed and a screened porch added to the front of the building. Sometime in the past couple of decades, the building became vacant, and today, it shows signs of deterioration externally, and vandalism on the interior, combined with a large amount of furnishings, personal belongings, and trash left behind either by the previous occupants or vandals. Unfortunately, though there is demand for mountain living, a lot of old buildings like this one are being left to the wayside as they are less desirable to new residents than a cabin on the steep side of a mountain, and the building, which has been unoccupied for some time, continues to decay and sit vacant, a sign of the reversal in fortunes the town experienced and one of many abandoned buildings in the town that are slowly fading, just like the memory that there ever was a thriving town here at all.
