English: Built in 1819-1820, this Federal-style building, constructed by Robert Russell, is the oldest building on the Centre College campus, and is the oldest continually operating academic building in the state of Kentucky. The building saw its most major changes during the mid-19th Century, with the construction of new wings to the north and south of the original structure, and the addition of two-story porticoes on the front and rear facade, with two more additions being built onto the rear in 1930. The building’s main facade, facing a large green to the east, features a large two-story portico with a pediment, architrave with triglyphs, six doric columns, triple double-hung windows at the central portion of the building, a central front door with sidelights and a fanlight transom, a hipped roof with a cornice featuring more triglyphs, three-bay wings flanking the central portico, doric brick pilasters, eight-over-twelve double-hung windows on the second floor, and twelve-over-sixteen double-hung windows on the first floor, and centrally-placed doors with decorative surrounds including pilasters. The rear of the building was originally narrower than the front of the building, but circa 1930, was renovated with the addition of two one-story wings with hipped roofs, flanking the older facade with a large two-story doric portico with paired columns, a architrave with triglyphs, a pediment, triple windows at the central wing, a door with a decorative surround featuring pilasters and a cornice, and a second-story window with a fanlight transom centered above the door. The building has served as a classroom building, dormitory, the college library, the college’s law program, the home of the college’s cafeteria, a grade school, and a military hospital during the US Civil War. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. The building was further renovated in 1991 and 2015, and now houses an Admission Welcome Center, administrative offices, and the office of the president of Centre College.
