Summary[edit]
DescriptionOld Commercial Bank Bradford 073b.jpg |
Architectural sculpture on former Commercial Bank, Bradford (now Natwest Bank) at 7 Hustlergate, Bradford, West Yorkshire. Designed by Andrews & Pepper in 1867 and opened in 1868. All exterior carving is by Mawer & Ingle of Leeds. The carving has a maritime theme throughout, in reference to 19th century British colonial sea trade, which was a source of profit for the bank. This theme includes friezes of waves, mythical or imaginary sea creatures, and mariners. Showing sea captain's head as label stop. The hat may be that of Vasco de Gama. The overhanging moustache and cavernous mouth of this piece suggest that it is by Catherine Mawer, who was one of the partners in Mawer and Ingle, and who was the only sculptor in the company known to do this. |
