Summary

[edit]
Description A victim of changing times and a new freeway interchange for US Highway 74, this old service station sits abandoned between Church Street and an off-ramp in the former town of Whittier, North Carolina. Constructed in the mid-20th Century, the station evidently started out as a Texaco, as indicated by the shape of the sign frame nearby, which later became a Phillips 66 before closing. Owned by HJ Davis, the garage served travelers along US Highway 19A between Bryson City and Dillsboro, and was one of many businesses on the Jackson County side of Whittier that sprung up around the highway, leaving the old commercial district on the Swain County side to decay and fade. The garage itself met a similar fate when, during the 1970s or 1980s, the portion of the road it faced was converted into an on-ramp and off-ramp for the new bypass Highway that passed by the town, limiting visibility and access to the business. Today, this is one of many abandoned buildings that reflect the fortunes of the once-thriving town in the 20th Century, one of decay, decline, and neglect.
