Summary
[edit]DescriptionOld Kentucky State House, Broadway Street and St. Clair Street, Frankfort, KY - 53029168944.jpg |
English: Built in 1827-1837, this Greek Revival-style building was designed by Gideon Shryock to serve as the Kentucky State Capitol. The building is clad in marble with a hexastyle front portico at the top of a set of front steps with fluted ionic columns, a cornice with dentils, a front pediment, a single bay on the front facade, housing a double entry door, twelve-over-twelve double-hung windows on the side facade, and a rooftop cupola with windows, engaged doric columns, and a metal dome. Inside, the building features well-preserved historic spaces, including a large circular stair hall beneath the cupola featuring a cantilevering stone staircase with a wrought iron railing, coffered ceilings, decorative plaster details, wooden doors, fluted ionic columns and pilasters, and stone floors on the ground level. The building served as the third Kentucky State Capitol from 1830 until the present State Capitol was built in 1910, and was restored in 1910-1920. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1971, is a contributing structure in the Old Statehouse Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, and is a contributing structure in the Central Frankfort Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. The building today houses a museum operated by the Kentucky Historical Society. |
