Summary
[edit]DescriptionOld Peabody Mill Dam 2.jpg |
English: Peabody Mill was first established in 1748 as lot 101 by Samuel Lamson, one of the first two residents of Amherst. Lot 101 became a sawmill in 1809 that provided wood for the area until it was closed in 1920. Charles Peabody purchased the property in 1888 and during his ownership the mill was named 'Peabody Mill'; despite Peabody Mill having 24 owners in the past couple hundred years, Peabody's name stuck. After Charles Peabody, the mill was acquired in 1924 by Leonard Reid, a bachelor who lived in Sawyer's Cottage, until his death in the 1940's. Chuck Bacon a history teacher, then bought the property in 1948 and began researching the history of the former mill. Eleanor (Tin) Bacon sold the property to the town of Amherst in 1997 where is has since grown into the nature center it is today.
The pictures show the foundation of the Old Peabody Mill Dam. Originally the dam spanned the entire brook and was used as an early source of waterpower. This alternative source of power allowed the colonization of the Northeast to grow very quickly. |
