| Description |
English: Built in 1901-1902, this Classical Revival-style building was constructed to house the public school for the city of Walton, Kentucky, and is identical to the former school in nearby Verona, Kentucky. A gymnasium was built behind the building in 1929. The building served as the local public school for all grades until 1935, when the school districts of the two communities were consolidated, with the Verona School becoming Walton-Verona Elementary School and the Walton School becoming home to Walton-Verona High School, which was housed in the building until 1954, when it was replaced by a newer, more modern school. The building then became apartments after being repaired from damage it sustained during a tornado that hit Walton on Friday, July 13, 1956, which ripped the roof off the rear of the gymnasium, shattered windows, and tore slate shingles from the roof of the school building. The building features a hipped roof with an extended central front bay with a front gable roof, replacement windows in window bays that have mostly been partially infilled, decorative brick panels, an arched opening at the front entrance door, a rusticated stone base, stucco cladding over the original brick exterior, and a metal fire escape mounted to the exterior. The interior originally housed six classrooms and an auditorium, arranged around a central stair hall, typical of public schools built in the late 19th Century and around the turn of the 20th Century. The gymnasium features a barrel vaulted roof with metal trusses, a concrete block exterior with replacement windows and a heavily modified front facade, owing to damage sustained in the tornado. The building is notable for its association with the Walton-Verona School District, where parents voted in favor of integrating the district in 1955, differing from the general resistance towards integration in much of the rest of the south. The original school building today serves as apartments, while the gymnasium houses a personal trainer business. |
