Summary[edit]

Description
English: Old Wardour Castle, 25 February 2018. Built by the 1st Baron Lovell late 14th Century in French hexagonal style (unique in England) but after the fall of the Lovell family in the mid 15th Century in the Wars of the Roses passed to the Arundell family. Subjected to two sieges in the English Civil War, firstly in 1643 by Parliamentarions against the Roylist Lady Blanch Arundell and secondly in 1644 by the Royalists led by her son, 3rd Baron Arundell who retook it but accidentally blew it up in the process! he had intended to lay a mine sufficient only to cause a breach but it went off prematurely and caused much more damage than intended! In the 18th Century the 8th Baron Arundell built nearby New Wardour Castle, which was a stately home, not a castle. Pictured is the picturesque lake seen from the castle battlements. New Wardour Castle can be glimpsed through the trees on the right.
