El general Oreste Baratieri tiene fama de buen escritor militar. En este libro sus buenas cualidades se manifiestan grandemente. El general Baratieri fuè gobernador civil y militar de la colonia italiana del Mar Rojo desde Marzo de 1892 hasta el 1 de Marzo de 1896. Relata en estas memorias, muy rica de detalles de extraordinaria importancia militar y de mapas para mejor inteligencia de la narracion, su conducta de gobernador, las razones que le indujeron a dar la batalla en la mañana del 1 de Marzo de 1896, por desdicha de Italia perdida, y explica que no fuè una istantanea locura la que le decidiò a iniciar el combate contra Menelik. Pide el juicio imparcial de la historia.

Il generale Baratieri è stato governatore civile e militare della colonia italiana del Mar Rosso dal marzo del 1892 fino al primo marzo del 1896. Racconta in queste Memorie, molto ricche di dettagli di straordinaria importanza militare e di mappe per una migliore comprensione della sua condotta come governatore, le ragioni che lo indussero a dare battaglia in quel mattino del primo marzo 1896, perduta per disgrazia dell’Italia, e spiega che non si trattò di una improvvisa pazzia che lo indusse a dare inizio al combattimento contro Menelik. Si affida al giudizio imparziale della storia.
