| Description | The interior of the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral of the Twelve Apostles in Mtskheta was originally painted with frescoes. These were whitewashed over, probably by subsequent invaders. Only recently, after much careful restoration, have some remnants of the original paintings have been revealed. These include fragments of a 13th-century Beast of the Apocalypse painting and a fresco depicting figures of the Zodiac. This portion of frescoes are typically Islamic in nature and have probably been added by one of the invading Moslem invaders. Paintings aside, the very base (foundation) of the basilica, laid by King Gorgasali way back to the the late 5th century was found during restoration works of the church circa 1970-71.
