Oswald Ross SWANZY. District Inspector Royal Irish Constabulary. Who gave his life in Lisburn Sunday 22 August 1920 and all his gallant comrades who like him been killed in the unfaltering discharge of their duty and in the service of their country. Erected by his mother and Irene his sister. Inquest held Corners Court Co Antrim 23 August 1920 Cause of death. Revolver bullet wound of the brain. Instant death. Murder, unknown perpetrator. Certified. He was aged 38. Born 15 August 1881 to James (Solicitor) and Elizabeth Goudy Swanzy, nee Ross of Castle Square, Castleblaney. County Monaghan, Ireland He joined the RIC on the 28th February 1905 with register number 61367; appointed 3rd Class District Inspector 6th May 1905 and allocated to Cavan (Swanlinbar) on the 15th Sep 1905. Promoted to 2nd Class D.I. 1 June 1907, 1st Class D.I. 1 Oct 1917 and also served in Limerick (Rathkeale), Carlow Town, and Cork City. He was off duty when he was brutally assassinated on a quiet, sunny Sunday in front of worshippers leaving the cathedral. It started the Swanzy Riots August 1920 in Lisburn.
