Ett av endast två kända porträtt av Generalmajor Otto Reinhold Wrangel af Sauss. Det andra, även det ett bystporträtt utfört av Scheffel, i vilket Wrangel är avporträtterad bärande gula kraghandskar, ingår in en svit porträtt av Kungliga Svea Livgardes officerare, sammanlagt 22 st. i Kungliga Svea Livgardes ägo vilka ursprungligen beställdes av riksrådet och generalmajoren Arvid Posse (1689-1754) för hans egendom Gottenvik på Vikbolandet utanför Norrköping (76 x 61 cm., SPA 1924:2557, Roth, op. cit., nr. 357). Bägge porträtten torde ha tillkommit i slutet av 1720-talet.

Otto Reinhold Wrangel af Sauss (1681–1745) var son till estländaren ryttmästaren Tönnes Johan Georgsson Wrangel till Huer (†1704) och Anna Margareta von Ramm till Padis (1643–1709). Han trädde i svensk krigstjänst och naturaliserades som svensk adelsman 1723 samt introducerades samma år på Riddarhuset under ättenummer 1770. Han fick två söner: generalmajoren Fredrik Ulrik (1719–93) och riksrådet Anders Reinhold (1722–80). Dessa upphöjdes båda den 15 oktober 1771 i friherrevärdighet och introducerades i denna 1776 under nummer 279, varvid den äldre adliga ätten Wrangel af Sauss utgick. Den friherrliga ätten fortlever däremot alltjämt genom Fredrik Ulriks ättlingar.

PROVENIENS Generalmajor Otto Reinhold Wrangel (1681‑1744) af Sauss; därefter i arv inom familjen Wrangel. Christian Fredrik Wrangel af Sauss (1847‑1932), ärvde 1889 Ellinge slott i Skåne. Porträttet hängde på Ellinge fram till 1950 då hans sonson Carl Gustaf Wrangel af Sauss (1914‑1992) sålde Ellinge till industrimannen Ernst Wethje. I samband med försäljningen hölls en auktion av lösegendom på slottet, 28‑30 augusti 1950. Den aktuella målningen var inte inkluderad i försäljningen; i arv inom familjen Wrangel till 2015.
