Description
English: Oval chambers on the 304 metre long Fonserannes flight of locks. The oval shape absorbs the horizontal stress on the lock wall caused by the earth behind the chamber wall in much the same way as the arch of a bridge absorbs the vertical stresses caused by the bridge superstructure.
Français : Écluses ovales sur le Écluses de Fonserannes. De forme concave pour résister à la pression du terrain de la même manière que l'arc d'un pont absorbe les contraintes verticales causées par la superstructure du pont.
This building is classé au titre des monuments historiques de la France. It is indexed in the base Mérimée, a database of architectural heritage maintained by the French Ministry of Culture, under the reference PA34000005 .
