De Wagen, op vier wielen, is een soort pyramide, wier zijden allerhand vuurwerk en vuurpijlen bevatten en die omringd is van een gordel van buskruit. Wanneer de pyramide uit haar reusachtige kist te voorschijn is gekomen, wordt ze door vier prachtige, met de stadswapens behangen ossen, langzaam tot vóór de poort; van de kathedraal getrokken, waar de verbranding zal plaats grijpen. Het brandend buskruit doet de verschillende stukken vuurwerk ontvlammen; de wiek doet het vuur voortloopen om, eenmaal opgebrand, onder den beroemden Brunelleschi-koepel den laatsten vuurpijl te doen opstijgen. Het volk zegt, dat een vlug voortloopend vuur een goeden en traag vuur een slechten oogst voorspelt. Men denkt den oorsprong van den Wagen bij Godfried van Bouillon's medekruisvaarder Peppino de' Pazzi te moeten zoeken, die, gezeten op een zegewagen, door de feestelijke stad en de juichende menigte reed.; |
