La Sierra del Courel es el paraje con mas biodiversidad de Galicia. En sus bosques se encuentra una gran diversidad botánica, tanto del clima mediterraneo como del atlántico y son refugio de una gran variedad de fauna (tiene el censo de vertebrados mas rico del noroeste de la Península Ibérica).A pesar de los datos abrumadores de su valor natural, el Courel NO es Parque Natural... El colectivo ecologista SOS Courel, denuncian en Parlamento de Europa, el «despoblamiento provocado intencionadamente», con el fin de «dejar terreno libre para la especulación de intereses privados devastadores».
