Summary
[edit]DescriptionPS Duchess of Hamilton (1890) (51024995613).jpg | A model of the Clyde paddle steamer PS Duchess of Hamilton at the Glasgow Transport Museum, 2 March 2007. She was built of steel in 1890 by Denny, Dumbarton for the Caledonian Steam Packet Co. and used on its Ardrossan run. The Duchess of Hamilton measured 250 ft x 30 ft x 10 ft, weighed 553 tons gross and had a 233 nhp Denny steam engine. She was the first Clyde steamer to have its promenade deck extended completely forward to the bow. In WWI the Admiralty requisitioned the vessel and in 1915 converted her to a minesweeper, HMS Duke of Hamilton but she hit a mine off Harwich and sank. |
