Amplia panorámica de un paisaje montañoso, en cuyo primer plano se abre un camino forestal que se bifurca en senderos que conducen a las inmediaciones de una granja rodeada de árboles. Un hombre cubierto con boina y apoyado en un varal se pierde por uno de los recodos del camino y, a la vera del sendero más cercano, se observa la presencia de una aldeana y ganado vacuno. La comparación con su boceto preparatorio (P4359), ilustra de forma excepcional la práctica habitual de Haes en la composición de cuadros de gran formato. La presencia de las figuras sobre las que ha trepado el pigmento utilizado en la zona del camino, pone en evidencia la introducción de estos elementos animados una vez que el cuadro estaba terminado, demostrando una vez más que la ambientación se ultimaba sobre la marcha y que Haes la consideraba todavía necesaria en la representación de un paisaje, aún cuando su teoría estética abogara por un género definido solo por la "esencia" de la naturaleza. El cuadro está dedicado a su amigo Manuel Rivadeneyra, famoso filólogo, editor e impresor. Fue donada al Museo por Manuela Rivadeneyra, viuda de Pí y Margall, aceptada por Real Orden de 29 de agosto de 1912 (Gutiérrez Márquez, A., Carlos de Haes en el Museo del Prado 1826-1898, Madrid , 2002). |
