English: "Penates (Household Gods) Dug Up at Devises in Our Belgium in the Year 1714, Table 5.

"8. Pallas. Length 3⅜ in.

"§. VII. This PALLAS is absolutely the Arean [Areia]—that is the Strong, Vigorous, and Martial One—to whom the Plataeans constructed a Temple from the fortifications at the battle of Marathon. Indeed, this is her, holding a Spear in her right hand, the Aegis in her left, and a Helmet on her head, albeit one that does not have a rounded Peak like the tutulati of the Dancing Priests, but an oblong one leading from the forehead to the nape of the neck. She was called Pallas, apò toû pállein tò dóru, from her shaking of her Spear. She was also called the Armisona ("Weapon-Sounder"), whence Vergil wrote,

"—Then we beseeched the Holy Spirit
of Pallas Armisona

"She was called Stratia ("Lady of the Army") or the Soldierly, Dorykéntōs (that is, the Spear-Pricker), Glaucopis ("Bright-Eyed") from her fearsome face, Gorgonea ("Terrible Lady") from her ferocious face. For Pallas, these Epithets speak to her her various virtues and the Little Image displays them well enough but in truth particularly her cruel aspect, almost equal to the Gorgon."

Notes: "To the Most Noble Prince Frederick, the destined Royal Heir, Great Britain's hope, Delight, and most yearned for Spirit, son of the Most High George and grandson of the Most August George, William Musgrave, Fellow (?) of Exeter College, Oxford, of his own will and in Obedience to his Oath wished these here Penates, hidden by the Earth for 1500 years, to be dedicated.

"These Penates [found] by William Cadby, Gardener at Devizes, engraved on Brass and printed on Imperial Paper, are available for sale at the Booksellers Knapton in London, Clements in Oxford, and Yeo in Exeter. 1717."

Musgrave's 2nd illustration of the Southbroom Hoard discovered outside Devizes, Wiltshire, in 1714.
