Pan Supari Bazaar, Hampi – Tracing a Long Lost Market Place

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: During the imperial days of Vijayanagara, this was a royal street that led to the palace. Much of it is ruined. Unlike the Hampi Bazaar or the Vittala Bazaar, its exact alignment exists only in archeological maps. However, you can still see a few remaining portions of it near the Hazara Rama Temple area. By the way Pan Supari means a type of betel morsel (a concoction made of areca nut, select spices, sweeteners and wrapped in tender betel leaf ). The reason for a curious name like this for such an important street is a mystery. However this name is mentioned in an inscription of Devaraya II, confirming the name's authenticity. On a lighter side, you'll see a great deal of areca nut plantations near the Royal Center!
