Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Two systems of panel workings used in the coal mines of north east England, according to a lecture given by Nicholas Wood in 1858. To prvent 'creep' - a progressive condition in which pillars of coal upholding the roof are crushed, thus increasing the pressure on those adjacent, so that the chain reaction spreads, the district is worked in panels. Strong barriers of coal isolate the panels. which may be worked by various methods. The technique was first used by coal viewer John Buddle.
