Français : Panneau Histoire de Paris: Grâce à son altitude, la colline de Montmartre représente déjà à l’ère quaternaire un lieu privilégié où se réfugient les grands mammifères dont Cuvier étudie les restes fossilisés dès 1798. La présence de sources et la richesse en gypse des sous-sols contribuent à favoriser l’éclosion d’un début de civilisation très précoce : un premier sanctuaire est sans doute édifié avant l’arrivée des druides. Bâti et habité par les Gallo-romains, le site porte à la fois un autel dédié à Mercure, à l’ouest de la colline, et un sanctuaire voué à Mars, au sud de l’église Saint-Pierre. D’où l’incertitude étymologique, entre le « Mont Mercurii » évoqué en 840 par Hilduin, et le « Mont Martis » auquel se réfère « Le siège de Paris » d’Abdon en 885. Au milieu du XIIIe siècle, la « Légende dorée » de Jacques de Voragine, véritable livre de chevet des châteaux aux chaumières, propage dans toute la chrétienté le renom du Mont des Martyrs, avec le récit du supplice de saint Denis et de ses compagnons. Ils éclipsent ainsi les dieux de l’industrie et de la guerre, sauf entre novembre 1793 et décembre 1794, où la butte se rebaptise « Mont-Marat », en hommage « l’ami du peuple ». |
