Description
English: Service of the Resurrection. The Paschal Candles symbolize the Light of Christ that shines forth from His divinity, which can never be over-taken by darkness (John 1:5). During this service, the Priest comes out of the Sanctuary and stands in front of the Royal Doors holding up a lighted candle, inviting the congregation to take of this light representing the risen Christ, with the words:
  • "Come ye and receive light from the unwaning Light, and glorify Christ, Who is arisen from the dead."
Additionally, this recalls the annual Miracle of The Holy Fire (Greek Ἃγιον Φῶς, "Holy Light") that occurs every year at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem on Great Saturday.
