ceremonial cloth made in Gujarat, India, for export to the Indonesian market. 'Hamsa' (Swan) feature design. 'Hamsa' is an ancient motif in Indian art. This occurs in early sculptural reliefs and in mural paintings of the Gupta period (320 circa 540 AD), as seen in the Ajanta Cave complex, and elsewhere. This is the preferred motif for gown designs from the Gupta period. The significance of 'hamsa' in Indonesia is less clear, but this cloth used to be an imported cloth from Gujarat which was in high demand due to its popularity in 1400-1600.
