Summary
[edit]DescriptionPaul Sandby - Col. David Watson c.1750.jpg |
English: Col. David Watson c.1750
Black and red chalks | 19.8 x 14.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914405 DESCRIPTION: A chalk drawing of Colonel David Watson in uniform seated cross-legged on a chair. In the wake of the Jacobite rising of 1745–6, Colonel Watson, a military engineer, suggested that a full survey of the Highlands be undertaken: he believed that ignorance of the terrain was hampering attempts to suppress support for the Jacobites. The team on the initial survey included Paul Sandby, who made this informal sketch of his employer. PROVENANCE: Probably among the group of figure studies acquired from Sir Francis Dyke Acland in 1930. |
