Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built circa 1750 for Royal Spanish Treasurer Juan Estevan de Peña of Coquina stone, this house was vacated by its occupants upon the end of the First Spanish Period and beginning of the British period in 1763. During the British period, the house was home to two governors of East Florida, John Moultrie and Patrick Tonyn. During the Second Spanish Period, Francisco Xavier Sanchez bought the house in 1791, with his wife owning it until her death in 1821. The house was owned by a series of owners until 1837, when it was bought by Dr. Seth Peck to house his family, whom added the wooden second floor to the structure to allow for ample living space. The first floor was home to an office for the doctor, living space, and a small shop space. In 1931, Anna Gardner Burt, the last of Peck’s descendants, died, and the house was left to the city of St. Augustine, which was hesitant to allow the house to be utilized as a museum, but ended up giving over management to The Woman’s Exchange, whom opened it to the public in 1932, and continue to run the house as a museum today.
