Summary
[edit]DescriptionPedestal of unrealized statue of General Philip Sheridan, Sheridan Drive, Tonawanda, New York - 20190925.jpg |
English: The stone marker that stands in the center island of Sheridan Drive between Delaware Avenue and Delaware Road in the Town of Tonawanda, New York, placed in 1925, was intended as the pedestal for an equestrian statue of Philip Sheridan, for whom the road was indirectly named (it was named after Sheridan Road in Chicago's northern suburbs, which in turn was named for General Sheridan). Unfortunately, Erie County taxpayers, for whom the decision to spend over $2 million in taxpayer money on a high-capacity highway through what was then sparsely populated farmland was already controversial, balked at the further expenditure. |
