Peinture murale montrant Krishna à gauche et Radha à droite La ville de Mandawa a été fondée au milieu du 18ème siècle dans le nord-est du Rajasthan, dans la région du Shekhawati. L'eau y est rare car le climat est semi-désertique. Mandawa était à l'époque une ville habitée par les familles de marchands qui organisaient le trafic des caravanes à travers cette partie du Marwar. Durant la période coloniale britannique, au 19ème siècle, ces marchands se sont déplacés dans les villes côtières : Bombay, Madras, Calcutta où ils ont obtenu le quasi-monopole du commerce et se sont fortement enrichis. Ils ont alors construit dans leur région d'origine, où étaient restées leurs familles, de luxueuses maisons appelées les "Haveli", véritables signes extérieurs de richesse. Une Haveli est construite autour de cours intérieures. La première cour sert aux réceptions et aux transactions commerciales, La deuxième cour est réservée à la famille. Les chambres sont à l'étage. Les maisons sont entièrement décorées avec des fresques relevant de l'art populaire (ou naif) et représentant des scènes mythologiques mais également contemporaines, montrant les objets et modes de vie des grandes villes. Aujourd'hui, les héritiers de ces riches marchands ne s'occupent plus guère de ces maisons qui se sont dégradées de manière importante et qu'ils ont confiées à un gardien. Malgré le manque d'entretien des maisons et la saleté des rues environnantes, les "Haveli" sont néanmoins devenues des attractions touristiques majeures des villes du Shekhawati. |
