Perilous situation of H.M.S.V. Intrepid in Baffins Bay - August 2. 1851. Christie's, September 23, 2004, London

May, an amateur artist who illustrated numerous Arctic subjects, was mate on HMS Resolute on the Franklin Search Expedition of 1850-51 (for which see note to the preceding lot). The ships had been frozen in the ice from September 1850 and were finally released on 8 August 1851. May's sketches depict the Intrepid in the throes of the thawing ice, a few days before her release.
