Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Person-Kloepfer House, 237 Depew Avenue, Buffalo, New York, July 2022. Built in 1926 to a design by the local architectural practice of Hudson & Hudson, here we see a high-style example of the Colonial Revival that was all the rage among upper-class residential architecture at the time: a scrupulously symmetrical five-bay façade centered on a semicircular Doric portico, with cut-stone splayed lintels over each window. Prominent also are the double chimney stacks that flank each end of the side-gabled roof. The house was built for Edward C. Person (1882-1943), scion of a storied local family whose prominence came from patriarch Charles' operation of the Buffalo-Grand Island ferry; Edward himself made his name as a liquor wholesaler with the Elm Street firm of C. Person's Sons but was forced into early retirement by the onset of Prohibition. Person's tenure as owner was relatively short: he moved out in 1929, selling the place to German-born financier George J. Kloepfer (1885-1952), who had served not only as a vice-president of the Liberty Bank, in executive roles with the American and State Bankers' Associations, and as an appointee to the Annual Assay Commission charged with inspecting the operations of the U.S. Mint, but also on the board of Meyer Memorial Hospital. Kloepfer lived in the house until his death.
