Summary
[edit]DescriptionPersonal Computers, Museum of American History (8447224896).jpg |
In 1996, I made my first-ever visit to Washington, DC, using the Election Day long weekend, while I was a college student in New York City. I spent four days in the capital, and my emphasis was primarily to cover various topics that I had learned in my high school history and government/civics classes. Museum of American History is one of the Smithsonian museums that line the Washington Mall. It is probably my favorite among the Mall museums. Here is one of my favorite displays there - personal computers developed in the 1970s. Although most people considered them to be novelties or toys, some, such as the Apple ][ (fourth from the left), were extremely competent. The third from the left is the original IBM PC from 1981 that brought the personal computer into the business realm. The leftmost computer is the original 1984 Apple Macintosh, which was to be the replacement for the Apple ][, though the ][ was so good and popular that Macintosh did not start overtaking it until 1988. |
