Summary[edit]

This is one of two images for showing the difference between phonology and phonetics. The other image is Image:Phonetic_Diagram_of_modern_Arabic_and_Hebrew_vowels-600dpi.png

The circles contain the vowel sounds of Standard Arabic (left) and Israeli Hebrew (right), in the International Phonetic Alphabet. Those are the sounds that must be produced for an acceptable pronunciation, more respected by the native speakers, even if not necessary for comprehension. In the actual sounds, in contradistinction to the phonemes, modern Arabic and Hebrew share none between them. The vowels of modern Arabic are more like those of English and German, while those of modern Hebrew are more like those of Italian and Spanish, therefore natives of one language who have not mastered the pronunciation of the other are easy to spot by native speakers of that other, even if they manage to make the phonological distinctions that enable comprehension of their words.

I made the images with OpenOffice 2.0 Draw. An SVG version can be exported from the ODG master files, but I do not know if MediaWiki can display the characters properly (Unicode characters from the IPA in the Doulos SIL font).
