Summary[edit]

Description
English: Accession Number: 2009.118..1-.3

Display Artist: Utagawa Kunisada Display Title: Picture of a Stylish Man's Shirabyoshi Dance Translation(s): Shirabyoshi imayo otoko mai no zu Creation Date: 1855 Medium: Woodblock Height: 14 1/4 in. Width: 10 in. Display Dimensions: 14 1/4 in. x 10 in. (36.2 cm x 25.4 cm) Publisher: Wakasaya Yoichi Credit Line: "Gift of Captain George B. Powell, Jr., JAGC, USN" Label Copy: "In a shiraby?shi (white rhythm) dance, courtesans dress in twelfth-century mens costumes and play male roles in an inversion of the norm. The hero of the Inaka Genji, Mitsuuji, is enjoying the production, while he is being served sake, and three female musicians behind him provide musical accompaniment. Kunisada thought correctly that placing Mitsuuji as a spectator of a shiraby?shi would be a popular subject among his print-buying public. Nowhere in the Inaka Genji itself does such a scene occur."
