Pile driving for the slipway for Surabaya Dock of 14,000 tons near Schellingwoude.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Title: Preparatory phase for the construction of Surabaya Dock

Description: Yard number 117, floating dry dock, built by Nederlandsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij (N.S.M.) for the Ministry of the Colonies.

The dock was built on a terrain near Schellingwoude, east of the Oranje Locks, because it would be to wide to pass these, or the IJmuiden Locks. 1,200 piles were driven into the ground in order to create a foundation for the heavy dry dock. Note the portable engines used for each pile driver.
