Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Pillar of Truth Church of God in Christ, 2072 Fillmore Avenue, Buffalo, New York, December 2021. One of the few surviving works of the local architectural firm of August E. Minks & Sons, this is at heart a rather austere wood-frame Gothic Revival design that makes up for its lack of any tower with some unusual half-timbering on the façade above the entrance. It was built in 1899 as home of Golgotha German Evangelical Church, which had been founded by a consortium of twelve families living on the fringe of the city's urbanized area and functioned initially as a mission congregation of the Western New York District of the Evangelical Synod of North America. Golgotha incorporated as a full-fledged congregation in 1904, took on the thematically similar name of Calvary Evangelical in 1915, merged with the former Emanuel United Methodist Church in 1974, and (under the name Calvary-Emanuel United Church of Christ) finally dissolved in 1994. The building has been home to Pillar of Truth Church of God in Christ ever since.
