Summary

[edit]
Description

"The L-4 was a basic Piper J-3. Modifications to the cockpit were designed to improve visibility. The L-4 was the first aircraft mass produced for use by the Army Ground Forces. The L-4 was deployed for service in 1942. Used primarily in the role of a light observation aircraft, it performed in almost every theatre of operation in World War II. It first saw combat during the invasion of North Africa. The L-4 remained active in the inventory during the Korean War for adjusting artillery fire and flying reconnaissance and liaison duties long after more advanced L-series aircraft were in use."
