| Description |
English: A modern plan (in flat relief) of the medieval Worcester city walls on City Wall Road near St Martin's Gate. It legend states "The medieval city was surrounded from 13th century by stone walls and a ditch. These defences both repelled attackers and controlled traders and other visitors to Worcester who had to pass through the gates at St. Martin's and elsewhere. At least five towers of bastions are believed to have existed, though the semi-circular structure to the right is the only known survivor. in the later medieval period the walls fell into decay, and needed extensive renewal during the Civil War (1642-51). By 1700 they had been demolished in many areas. Today the most extensive remains can be seen along City Walls Road and the river side these are now protected as Ancient Monuments". |
