English: The power of the city itself against the Order of Calatrava is symbolized by its beautiful Town Hall (1565-1570), built in the main square, forming an angle to the Gothic Lonja. Both buildings were declared historical monument in 1931 (Gazeta de Madrid, No. 155, 04/06/1931). This building, a magnificent classical example, evokes the great circle of humanists alcañizanos their particular Golden Age: John sonarías, Juan Lorenzo Palmireno, Miedes Bernardino Gómez, Domingo Andrés, Pedro Ruiz de Moros y Andrés Vives and Altafulla, to name the most prominent (which is devoted to an article in this volume). The sixteenth century also left its mark on the castle itself, with the alabaster tomb of the commander Don Juan de Lanuza by Damián Forment made in 1537 - and tables preserved in their parish church attributed to the "Master of Alcaniz. They are also fine examples of the art world alcañizano XVI century church of Santo Domingo in which blend tradition with the new language Gothic-Renaissance and a number of palatial buildings. |
