Plaza de la Lealtad – Dos de Mayo – Front view

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: On May 24, 1814, the Cortes decided to erect a monument to the Victims of the napoléonic régime executed on the 2nd and 3rd of May, 1808, the repression which triggered the 1808-1814 War of Independence.

The project of Architect Isidro González Velásquez (1765-1840) was selected in 1822. In remembrance of the Victims, the area chosen for the erection of the Obelisk, completed in 1825, was one of the several places of these executions which was named "Campo de la Lealtad" on that occasion (later renamed “Plaza de La Lealtad”).

On May 2, 1840, the ashes of Pedro Velarde and Luis Daoíz (which had been safeguarded at Cádiz and Badajoz) were translated into the sarcophagus on the front face of the obelisk, and the memorial inaugurated.

The inscription “Honor a todos los que dieron su vida por España” and the Eternal Flame were added in 1985 to re-inaugurate the monument while enhancing its original signification.
