English: Plesh Contract Packaging, 702 Northland Avenue, Buffalo, New York, March 2021. A contributing property to the proposed Northland-Belt Line Historic District, this bipartite manufacturing complex was designed in 1913 by the locally-based firm of Cyrus K. Porter and Sons and features a two-story warehouse portion fronted by a five-story office block whose architectural detail is more ornate and takes on a Classical flavor: stylized Doric pilaster strips climb the façade; a modillion-bracketed cornice extends across the flat roofline; segmental-arched triple windows on the flourth floor provide a measure of contrast vis-à-vis the rectangular ones elsewhere. Sadly, the modestly handsome Doric entrance portico that was once centrally located at street level has been lost. The building was constructed as the headquarters of the Northland Rubber Company, a manufacturer of automobile tires, but their tenure in the building didn't last long: they were bought out in 1917 by the Springfield, Ohio-based Kelly-Springfield Tire Company, who themselves were gone in short order. The Bemis Brothers Bag Company was next, and remained headquartered in the facility for much longer: they churned out burlap, cotton, and paper sacks on the property until the mid-1980s. Plesh Contract Packaging has been in operation there since 2012. |
