Description

ID#: 2998 Description: Pneumocystis carinii, now called P. jiroveci, is present in this lung impression smear, using Giemsa stain.

Pneumocystis carinii, is found in the environment as well as in the lungs of healthy humans and animals, causing disease in immunosuppressed individuals, and is arguably the most important cause of pneumonia in the immunocompromised host.
