Leaving Auschwitz I, this is outside the compound. The guard towers were wooden structures of three different heights, seven towers are around the perimeter. This is the largest of the guard towers.

It was a bit ironic that the day we visited the camps the weather was bleak and overcast......

I must apologize, I was asked many times about the emotions I felt when visiting these places. I have to say the feelings were not as emotional as they probably should have been. When taking pictures I get so caught up trying to capture the moments and getting that special shot that I do not really appreciate what I am seeing. It is not until I make my book, work on the pictures and gather information that I say, wow, to myself and realize what I saw. But my goal was to tell the world what had happened to the best of my ability so we never forget the horrific things that happened here.

A tour is so different from just visiting, you are rushed and have a very limited time to just sit, take it in and think. That is not to say I did not feel anything, how could I not and I pray it never happens again. Also and not to be critical at all, I think the place is almost to clean and neat from how it really must have been when occupied by the prisoners - but that being said no one wants to walk in filth and there are safety concerns.
