Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 2.2-2.5 m; Weight: 175-650 kg; Identification: Polar bears have a thick white or yellowish coat; Habitat: Sea ice and waters, islands, coasts; Diet: Carnivore: seals, fish, seabirds, arctic hares, caribou, musk oxen; Reproduction: Polar bears mate in April, May, or June. The female delays implantation of the fertilized egg, leading to a gestation period of 195-265 days. One to three cubs are born and remain with their mother for 28 months; Social Structure: Although polar bears are usually solitary, they will often congregate when feeding; Behavior: Unlike most bears, polar bears are not afraid of man and will even stalk them as if they were natural prey; Status: Vulnerable; Interesting Facts: Polar bears are the largest land carnivore. They are well adapted to the cold with a very thick coat, a layer of fat, and small ears. They've been known to swim for hours and can travel 43 miles in one day.
