Français : Édouard Riou, qui était en visite en Italie pour couvrir des mariages, a également peint des scènes de diverses régions d'Italie. C'est l'un d'eux.

Courrier d'Italie. Milan, 10 février 1859. J'ai franchi, hier soir, la ligne frontière qui sépare le Lombard-Vénitien des Etats Sardes. Le soleil se couchait en ce moment derrière nos wagons qui, parcourant le railway de Turin à Milan, traversaient d'un essor rapide le pont iuternational. A notre gauche se découpait sur l'horizon la chaîne des Alpes dont la crête neigeuse se colorait de teintes roses. En avant, comme derrière nous, s'étendait une vaste plaine où se perdaient dans la verdure la petite bourgade de Tichino, que nous venions de quitter et celle de Magenta qui groupait devant nous ses toits de chaume; rien, que quelques bouquets d'arbres, ne rompait l'uniformité de cette étendue monotone que le soleil inondait et colorait de ses derniers rayons. Plus près de nous, les pavillons de la douane autrichienne, élevés à l'extrémité orientale du pont, semblent observer, comme deux sentinelles, les pavillons semblables construits à l'extrémité opposée pour la douane piémontaise. Le Tessin, dont les eaux sont encore très-basses, promenait silencieusement ses eaux paresseuses entre les rives de gazon et les atterrissements couverts de roseaux, de grands joncs et de glaïeuls qui obstruent le lit du fleuve. Vous me demandez des renseignements sur le croquis du pont du Tessin que j'ai dessiné pour le Monde illustré. Voici ce que je puis vous donner. C'est un feuillet que j'arrache à mon carnet de voyage. Je ne saurais vous dire l'impression de tristesse dont on se sent, dont moi du moins je me sentis le cœur rempli devant cette nature calme, uniforme, muette, presque inculte et déserte. Et c'était pourtant cette Italie si célèbre que le moyen âge anima de son activité industrieuse, comme l'antiquité l'avait remplie de sa vie guerrière ; la terre des Scipion, des César et des Médicis ; cette terre que, laissant d'autres admirer l'éclat de sa puissance, je n'avais voulu entrevoir qu'au rayonnement de ses arts. Je me rappelai involontairement ces beaux vers où lord Buon a retracé avec tant de charme et de poésie l'aspect funèbre et à la fois frais et serein de la Grèce ottomane dans son Giaour. Il est vrai que je me trouvais en ce moment sous l'impression du plus profond contraste. Je quittais les villes du Piémont encore tout émues de leurs préoccupations et de leurs fêtes. C'était du milieu de cette agitation, de cet empressement, de cette vie bruyante et joyeuse, que je me trouvais tout d'un coup transporté en présence de cette nature calme comme la solitude monotone, comme le désert. Et puis la plaine que je venais de traverser était la plaine de Novare. Quelle que soit la cause de mon impression personnelle, le site m'a semblé avoir une importance, un caractère et une couleur qui le rendent digne de trouver place dans votre journal. En attendant de plus volumineux envois, je le dépose sous la même enveloppe que cette lettre.

Posta dall'Italia. Milano, 10 febbraio 1859. Ieri sera ho varcato la linea di confine che separa il Lombardo-Veneto dagli Stati Sardi. Il sole tramontava in quel momento dietro i nostri vagoni che, percorrendo la ferrovia da Torino a Milano, attraversavano a passo spedito il ponte internazionale. Alla nostra sinistra c'erano le Alpi, la cui cresta innevata si colorava di rosa. Davanti a noi, come alle nostre spalle, si stendeva una vasta pianura dove si perdevano nel verde il piccolo paese di Tichino, che avevamo appena lasciato, e quello di Magenta che raggruppava davanti a noi i suoi tetti di paglia; nulla, tranne qualche gruppo d'alberi, rompeva l'uniformità di quella distesa monotona che il sole inondava e colorava con i suoi ultimi raggi. Più vicino a noi, le bandiere della dogana austriaca, issate all'estremità orientale del ponte, sembrano osservare, come due sentinelle, le analoghe bandiere innalzate all'estremità opposta per la dogana piemontese. Il Ticino, le cui acque sono ancora molto basse, si muoveva silenzioso con le sue acque pigre tra le rive erbose e le terre ricoperte di canne, grandi giunchi e gladioli che ostruiscono il letto del fiume. Mi chiedi informazioni sul bozzetto del ponte del Ticino che ho realizzato per Le Monde Illustré. Ecco cosa posso darti. È un foglietto che strappo dal mio taccuino di viaggio. Non posso dirvi il sentimento di tristezza che si prova, del quale almeno mi sono sentito colmare il cuore davanti a questa natura calma, uniforme, muta, quasi incolta e deserta. Eppure era quest'Italia così famosa che il Medioevo l'animava con la sua operosa attività, così come l'antichità l'aveva riempita della sua vita guerriera; la terra di Scipione, Cesare e Medici; questa terra che, lasciando che gli altri ammirassero lo splendore della sua potenza, avevo voluto solo intravedere attraverso lo splendore delle sue arti. Involontariamente mi sono ricordato di quei bellissimi versi in cui Lord Buon ha tracciato tanto fascino e poesia l'aspetto funebre e allo stesso tempo fresco e sereno della Grecia ottomana nel suo Giaour. Mail from Italy. Milan, February 10, 1859. Yesterday evening I crossed the border line which separates Lombardy-Venetian from the Sardinian States. The sun was setting at that moment behind our wagons which, traveling the railway from Turin to Milan, crossed the international bridge at a rapid pace. To our left was the Alps, whose snowy crest was colored pink. In front of us, as well as behind us, stretched a vast plain where the small town of Tichino, which we had just left, and that of Magenta which grouped its thatched roofs in front of us were lost in the greenery; nothing, except a few clumps of trees, broke the uniformity of this monotonous expanse which the sun flooded and colored with its last rays. Closer to us, the Austrian customs flags, raised at the eastern end of the bridge, seem to observe, like two sentinels, the similar flags built at the opposite end for the Piedmontese customs. The Ticino, whose waters are still very low, moved silently with its lazy waters between the grassy banks and the lands covered with reeds, large rushes and gladioli which obstruct the bed of the river. You ask me for information on the sketch of the Ticino bridge that I drew for Le Monde Illustré. Here is what I can give you. It's a leaflet that I tear out of my travel notebook. I cannot tell you the feeling of sadness with which one feels, with which at least I felt my heart filled in front of this calm, uniform, mute, almost uncultivated and deserted nature. And yet it was this Italy so famous that the Middle Ages enlivened it with its industrious activity, just as antiquity had filled it with its warlike life; the land of Scipio, Caesar and Medici; this land which, leaving others to admire the brilliance of its power, I had only wanted to glimpse through the radiance of its arts. I involuntarily remembered those beautiful verses in which Lord Buon traced with so much charm and poetry the funereal aspect and at the same time fresh and serene of Ottoman Greece in its Giaour. It is true that I found myself at that moment under the impression of the most profound contrast. I left the towns of Piedmont still very moved by their concerns and their festivals.
