Description
English: Il cosiddetto "Carmagnola" giunse a Venezia forse da Bisanzio a seguito dell'impresa costantinopolitana del 1204. Deve il suo nome al capitano di ventura Francesco Bussone, detto il Carmagnola, che fu ingiustamente condannato per tradimento e giustiziato per decapitazione nel 1432. La sua testa fu esposta lungo il lato sud della Basilica. Il colore della pietra e l'espressione del porfido bizantino convinsero i veneziani a identificarla con quella dello sfortunato comandante.
