Summary[edit]

Description
English: 1955 Mercury D-528 Concept Car "Formed By Function" they say, 1950s design study. Enjoyed at the Petersen Automotove Museum, Los Angeles, October 2019.

Ok, lets start with the two gluteus maximus bulges.. very functional. The spare tire is in one, a portable gasoline can is in the other. Glad you asked.

The sloping roofline and decreased headroom in the back seat - kids in back, adults in front. Or the adults in the back seat are reclining. Next: sweeping, half-undressed wheel-wells. Presumably the suspension will allow the wheel to hang low enough to be removed and installed straight-on. Right? Knee-height double-door at front edge of driver's door. Mmm. retractable rear view mirror? Knee-to-waist fresh-air cooling for the front seat couple waiting their turn for the back seat? Note that this is an American Car from the 1950s, bench seats wide enough for 3 adults., sitting up.

Front of the front fenders have recessed headlamps, one on each side, looking a bit like F-86E noses. Between them, recessed, is a horizontal fold across the front of the hood, and 6 discontinious air grilles, presumably for the engine radiator. Equally spaced across the front of the hood, bent at the fold. Not cheap, that. Following the evolution of radiators from tall, narrow, things to broad, short things. But a full width grille is hard to call functional, and the front and rear overhangs have the same problem.

Recessed door handles look like funnels to pour water into the interior of the door, not sleek, streamlined handles like a modern Tesla. And what can anone say about the little black zephers trailing along the back fenders after the C pilar?
