Image title | Alexander der Große gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Feldherren der Geschichte. Auch nach seinem Tod genoss er große Verehrung, weshalb das Gros seiner Bildnisse posthum geschaffen wurden. Der heldenhafte Mut, das "Löwenhafte" Alexanders wurde in seinen Porträts gemäß der antiken Bildsprache durch die mit den über der Stirn hochgeworfenen Strähnen zum Ausdruck gebracht. Das Landesmuseum ist im Besitz von vier Alexander-Darstellungen, die aus der Sammlung des Stuttgarters Ernst von Sieglin stammen, der zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts einer der großen Mäzene der Stadt war und Ausgrabung in Ägypten finanzierte. Dadurch gelangte er in den Besitz einer wertvollen Sammlung, die er durch den Erwerb von Antiken im Kunsthandel und den Ankauf von Privatsammlungen erweiterte. Ein Teil seiner Sammlung schenkte er König Wilhelm II. (reg. 1891-1918), der diesen wiederum der Königlichen Staatssammlung Vaterländischer Altertümer überantwortete. |
