Français : « Portrait de Madame Calès »

M. O. 331. Toile. – H. 1m 92 ; L. 1m 30. – Don de M. Poupardin, 1860. En pied, debout, la tête de trois quarts, tournée à gauche, vêtue d'une robe blanche qu'entoure une écharpe rouge, madame Calès tient de la main droite une fleur, et sa main gauche est posée sur un livre de botanique renfermant la gravure d'une plante au bas de laquelle on lit : « Sida crastifolia, P. S. Redouté, del. » Au-dessus de cette gravure, dans un livre entr’ouvert, à la première page, est le portrait de J. Calès, auquel est joint le titre suivant : « Les genres des plantes de Ch. Linné », traduit par J. M. C....nierre (sic), édition en 2 volumes, première partie, à Paris, l'an VII de la République. Donné au Musée par M. Poupardin, le 20 septembre 1860. Marie-Sylphide Chardon, née à Sedan, mariée en premières noces à Gabriel-Etienne Poupardin du Rivage, d'Orléans, et en secondes noces à Jean-Marie Calès, député à la Convention nationale.

Ce portrait, donné an Musée par la famille Poupardin, a été longtemps attribué par David, collègue de Calès à la Convention, comme de nombreux portraits qui ont depuis été attribués à d'autres peintres ; David aurait offert son travail à son modèle : c'est du moins ce qui est de tradition dans la famille Poupardin. Ces détails ont été communiqués, au mois d'août 1873, par M. Poupardin, directeur des domaines à Bar-le-Duc.
